Melzer’s Fuel Service Inc. (MFS), was started in 1977 by Dick Melzer and his wife Adele. Prior to starting MFS, Dick started working for Sohio in 1952. After being a long-time employee of Sohio, Dick was given the opportunity to become a contractor for Sohio in 1977. So with a small route in Chardon, Ohio, he started MFS and began delivering home heating oil, and farm fuels. In 1990, Dick hired his first employee, and in 1995 he incorporated MFS, with Dick as President, Rick Melzer as Vice President, and Adele Melzer as Secretary Treasurer.
Over the years, MFS has grown and to what it is today, servicing multiple states, and having a very diverse customer base, and over 30 employees.
Rick was born in 1970 and raised in Chardon, Ohio where he still calls it home. Rick attended Park Electuary, Chardon Middle, and is a 1988 graduate of Chardon High School. He began is working career for Air Cleaning Systems working in their service department. In 1990, Rick was offered an opportunity by his father, “Dick Melzer”, to become the first employee of Melzer’s Fuel Service. Rick went to work as the only driver and operated the fuel route that his father had built over the years.
With the business seeing substantial growth, Rick became the Vice President in 1995. As Vice President and a route driver he oversaw the growth. In 1999 with the passing of Rick’s father he became the President of Melzer’s Fuel and has also had rolls in Northeast Lubricants, as its President. (A Lubricant Jobber).
For many years, Rick was a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Chardon Fire Department. He is also a member and an officer, of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Geauga Aerie #2261. He is also a member of the Chardon VFW Auxiliary #6519, both located in Chardon. Rick continues on today as the President, CEO and Chairman of the Board for Melzer’s Fuel Service.
Andy was born in Chardon in 1966 and has always called Chardon home. Andy has one son “Drew” and companion Barb. He attended Park Elementary, Chardon Middle, and was a 1984 graduate of Chardon High. Upon graduation he worked various jobs including Geauga County Water Resources.
In 1995, Andy came to work for Melzer’s Fuel as a route driver. With the passing of his father, Dick Melzer, Andy became the Vice President. As Vice President, Andy oversaw the day to day operations, and dispatch. Sadly, Andy passed away on September 18th, 2015.
